If you are looking for an excellent family dining experience in the Avon Village, The Dolphin Den might be your first choice! You can’t miss the large sign as you drive on South Highway 12. Once in the restaurant, you immediately notice the juniper paneling as you settle into one of the wooden tables or booths. The owner has pictures of fish on the wall, and lobster traps hanging from the ceiling. Those of you who are historically inclined will enjoy seeing the upright piano that came from the Gaiety Burlesque Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Dolphin Den was originally a Donut Shop and Diner when Ted’s wife, Jaye, convinced him to move back to her home place. The restaurant has been completely updated, and the wait staff is experienced.
Herb Clements is the Chef at Dolphin Den and has worked for Ted and Jayne for more than 10 years.
Ted Torok and his wife, Jaye, a fifth-generation resident of Hatteras Island, purchased the restaurant in the summer of 1999. Previously, his wife had taught government in the Virginia Beach, Virginia, school system while Ted was operating Rouges Gallery, a famous beach nightspot. Ted’s last restaurant experience (he had operated eight) was put to the test in Avon the first year he ran the establishment, when a series of Hurricanes struck the island, one of which severely damaged the eatery’s roof. The former professional football player (Baltimore Colts 1965-66 and Norfolk Neptunes 1968-69) and night-club owner survived working seven days a week to build this restaurant into a landmark business.
