The Dunes Restaurant

Chef Matt Arnold received his formal culinary education at the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont. He fell in love with the South and the Outer Banks when he worked with Ben and Karen Baker at the award-winning Magnolia Grill in Durham, North Carolina. Before culinary school, he grew up in Lee's Summit, Missouri, and graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas with degrees in organizational and public communications. While in college, he worked every position in a large restaurant, and worked his way to General Manager of Teller's Restaurant.

After culinary school, Chef Matt worked extensively with Lidia Bastianich, "the First Lady of Italian Cooking". He worked in her Kansas City, Missouri, restaurant and was the Executive Chef and General Manager of Lidia's Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, for two years. He has appeared with Lidia on her PBS television show on several occasions.

Chef Matt says he loves the sense of friendly community on the Outer Banks and is passionate about Southern Cooking. He is looking forward to contributing to the cuisine of the region with new and innovative dishes utilizing the best of local ingredients.

Owner Biography

The Dunes Restaurant

Husband and wife team, Rufus and Roxie Pritchard, own and operate The Dunes Restaurant.  Rufus attended Campbell College and Roxie attended Atlantic Christian College.  Rufus worked at the East Carolina Bank for 7 ½ years as a Branch Manager.  Roxie had worked briefly in restaurants while going through college.  Both North Carolina natives met while on a blind date and were later married.  The idea to establish The Dunes Restaurant fell into their laps when a customer at the bank mentioned a breakfast establishment going up for sale.  Now they have three children; Davis, Patrick and Sarah.  Davis currently works in the back of the restaurant as a sous chef and Patrick currently works in the front of the restaurant overseeing things.   The Pritchard family has truly created a family friendly restaurant!
